Living in Poland

Driving licence

The Monegasque driving licence is recognised by the Polish authorities (click here to view the link to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic 1968).

There are four conditions:

  • You must be the minimum age required in Poland to drive vehicles in the equivalent licence category
  • Your right to drive must not have been suspended, withdrawn or cancelled in the country in which your licence was issued
  • Your right to drive must not have been cancelled or invalidated in Poland before you obtained your foreign licence
  • You must comply with the medical conditions indicated on your licence (for example, requirement to wear glasses)

Exchanging a foreign licence for a Polish licence

To be able to continue driving in Poland after six months, you must apply to exchange your foreign licence for a Polish licence.

The procedure for exchanging a driving licence is as follows:

Submit an application by post or in person to the following authorities (depending on your place of residence):

  • District Office ("starostwo powiatowe")
  • City Hall ("urząd miasta")
  • Warsaw District Office  ("urząd dzielnicy")

The following documents are required:

  • The duly completed application form (available online or from the Office. If you do not speak Polish, we recommend that you seek assistance from the Office)
  • Your recent photo (size: 35x45mm)
  • Passport or residence permit (karta pobytu)
  • A copy of your residence permit, visa or any other document confirming your right to stay in Poland and your registration of residence ("zameldowanie")
  • Certified translation into Polish of your driving licence together with a copy of your driving licence

If you do not apply to exchange your licence within this timeframe, or if your licence cannot be exchanged, you will no longer be able to drive in Poland on your foreign licence and you will need to pass a Polish driving test.
