Living in Germany

Civil status

Monegasque nationals who wish to live and work in Germany must hold a valid identity card or passport.

For tourist visits of less than 3 months, no visa is required. However, a visa is required for tourists staying for over 3 months or travelling in a professional capacity.

For further information on the various procedures for obtaining a residence or work permit, please consult the following websites:

Driving licence

The Monegasque driving licence is recognised by the German authorities (click here to visit the website of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport).

There are four conditions:

  • You must be the minimum age required in Germany to drive vehicles in the equivalent licence category
  • Your right to drive must not have been suspended, withdrawn or cancelled in the country in which your licence was issued
  • Your right to drive must not have been cancelled or invalidated in Germany before you obtained your foreign licence
  • You must comply with the medical conditions indicated on your licence (for example, requirement to wear glasses)

Exchanging a foreign driving licence for a German driving licence

To be able to continue driving in Germany after a year, you must apply to exchange your foreign driving licence for a German driving licence.

If you do not apply to exchange your driving licence within this timeframe, or if your driving licence cannot be exchanged, you will no longer be able to drive in Germany on your foreign driving licence and you will need to pass a German driving test.
